Why You Need To Be A Freelance Construction Estimator

By Jocelyn Davidson

Hiring a freelancer is one great way to save time and money. Generally, they have the most artistic freedom since they are not tied up to a company or an organization. There are a lot of freelancers available for all sorts of job. If you decide to get one, you would be working and communicating directly with them, which would eliminate confusion that normally comes with working with a team.

If you have a contractor or a builder, they normally include the estimate with the bid for the job. However, there are instances wherein you would need professionals from different company to work together on the construction. Getting a freelance construction estimator may be a good decision for you, long as you know what to look for and expect from one.

Check your rate. Most people opt for a freelancer because they come cheap. Do not be so excited and quote a price as if you are already well established. You may start your rate a little lower, and go higher up as you gain experience and confidence on your own job.

Another benefit of them being solo is that they are flexible. That extends to a lot of areas in their work. They hold their own time, so they can go with changes in plans. This also means that they are used to working with different types of people and would do well with a team.

Check their availability. They may be stuck with a job right now and cannot report to you soon. If they have work, that is a good sign that they can be trusted. However, if they cannot accommodate you at the time you need them, then it defeats the whole purpose of getting a freelancer. This can also cause delay and may clash with your project in the future.

Work on mastering your skills. You will be working alone most of the time. If you are going solo, you will lose the teams that normally correct or make adjustments to your report. The finished report reflects not the combination of different minds and ideas but your own. Know the ins and outs of your job and impress that client with your knowledge.

They have a variety of experience. Working in a company is not a guarantee that the estimator has had a lot of project. There are other estimators within the company so jobs can be distributed randomly. Freelancers work on their own, and their clients get to them directly. They have more hands on experience than their contemporaries who are part of a group.

Set your expectations. It would be best if you tell your estimator on the get go what you expect from them you have to be honest with them, particularly about budget, so they can also make adjustments on their own without compromising the whole plan. Be clear as to your goals, and never be afraid to ask questions and to clarify things.

At the end of the day, to be a good freelancer, you have to know how you expect your own freelancer worker to be. Define your idea of a good freelance worker. Then be an embodiment of that idea. Good things will surely follow.
