Spill Containment Pallets Are Popular Safety Precautions

By Katrina Wheeler

Chemicals are used in many manufacturing and processing plants around the world. These, often dangerous, materials should stay within the containers they are stored in so that no one is impacted in a negative way. The spill containment pallets that are available from several vendors will help ensure this containment and prevent the spills that are, unfortunately, all too common.

It does not matter what type of material is used to construct the drums, barrels or even the tanks that are used for the shipment and storage of chemicals. They will leak if they are exposed to rough handling or if they come in with rust or corrosion on them. They can be hit with many of the moving machinery or fork lifts and can fall from their places.

The leak from that container, when it occurs can become a spill if it is allowed to fall to the floor or gets onto a processing surface. This is when the rules and regulations from the EPA come into he picture. The closing of that production or processing line will have to occur and all personnel will be moved from it. Non contaminated materials will also need to be moved and the barriers, to keep others out, will be erected.

All non contaminated materials will have to be removed from the area as well as all personnel. These people will have to be sidelined or sent to other lines to work. Barriers will then be set up to keep other people out and hazardous material handling teams will be called. The removal and clean up of the chemical will then begin.

The chemical will have to be neutralized before anything else can happen. This is accomplished by using the right counter agents to make it inert. This will also help ensure it does not become more airborne than it already might be. This material will go into a special drum prepared for this purpose. The proper disposal will be accomplished by a company certified and licensed for this. The final tasks will include a janitorial cleaning that will remove any residue.

Procedures for the recovery of a spill will not have to go into effect if there is no spill. The leaking of the drum or barrel will go into the reservoir that is in the bottom of this specially designed containment pallet. They come in enough different sizes that all of the contents of these containers will fit in that reservoir. This is an easy way to keep the plant running and all personnel are safe from any chemical spills.

If and when a leak is detected, the pallet can be moved from the area to a special cleaning section of the plant. A new container can be brought in and production resumed quickly. The leaking drum or barrel can be emptied and the pallet can be neutralized and cleaned out.

Spill containment pallets do just that. They contain the leaks and prevent the spills that will cause the regulations to be needed. They will help safeguard your employees and the physical plant. They are constructed from some of the strongest, non reactive materials and will last a very long time.
