How To Remove Many Common Stains From Carpets

By Suzanne Herrman

If you have carpet, chances are that sometimes food, drink or other substances get spilled on these fibers. Some stains are simple to remove, but others can be quite difficult to remove. It is important to understand the following facts before you start to remove a particularly difficult stain.

No matter what type of stain you have, there are two constant stain removal tips. The first is that you need to act as quickly as possible and the second is that you need to be gentle with your carpet. Always blot and never rub at a stain. Not only does this cause damage to the carpet fibers, it also pushes the liquid into the padding, which you definitely do not want. Quite a few stains can be removed by blotting up the liquid, rinsing with cold water and then blotting up the excess water. Use papers towels or a clean cloth, preferably white, to blot up the stain and water rinse.

One common stain that is highly noticeable is red wine, and as with any stain, the quicker you act, the better chance you have of removing the stain. Begin by gently blotting up the wine and then sprinkle or spray on cold water. Then blot up the water and the stain should disappear. You also can use club soda in place of cold water and even white wine can be used in a pinch to remove a red wine stain.

Wax might seem like an impossible substance to remove from your carpeting, but if a candle drips all over the carpet fibers, all is not lost. First you need to freeze the wax by placing a bag of ice on top of the wax. Be sure that the bag is entirely waterproof as moisture on the carpet will inhibit the freezing of the wax. Once it is frozen, grab your dull butter knife and scrape away at the wax gently. This should remove most of the problem, and for what remains, you'll need an iron and paper bag or paper towels. Place the bag or towels over the wax, turn the iron on to a warm setting and rub. The wax will melt and stick to the bag and presto, the wax is off of your carpet. If a stain remains from a colored candle, treat the stain with water, soapy water or a carpet cleaning solution.

If you have a dog, you've probably had a urine stain on your carpeting at least once. This common stain does require some work to remove, but if you fail to remove the urine thoroughly, not only is this a bit unsanitary, the dog can smell the traces of urine and is more likely to return to that spot to urinate in the future. Begin by soaking up the urine with clean paper towels and then create what is known as poultice. Take about five paper towels and dampen them and then lay them over the stain. Weight these paper towels down with something heavy and allow it to rest for 10 minutes. Then treat the area with urine cleaner that removes all traces of the urine and the scent. Reapply the poultice overnight and by morning the stain should be gone.

Of course, with some stains, it is simply wise to call in an expert, such as a trusted Denham Springs carpet cleaning service, a Baton Rouge carpet cleaning service or a Prairieville carpet cleaning service. They can remove almost any stain on any type of carpeting or, at the very least, they can provide you with some helpful advice. Be sure to call them at least twice each year for professional carpet cleanings as these remove stains, dirt, dust, fungi and other toxins from your carpeting.
