What You Need To Know About Septic Systems Queensland

By Charles Burns

Basically, a septic system is an efficient, self-contained, wastewater treatment system. Compared to centralized sewer systems which are usually spaced widely apart, they appear to be more economical since they treat and dispose the wastewater from the household onsite. Septic systems Queensland are simple in design making them cheaper to install and maintain. At the same time, they do not cause disruption to the environment since they are located at the backyard of a home.

Mostly, the system consist of two major parts, the septic tank, and the drain-field. Normally, a tank may be constructed by concrete or made of fiberglass, and are usually watertight with an inlet and an outlet. The tank is also connected with pipes through which wastewater from household flows to the tank. The wastewater is naturally treated inside the tank since it is held for a long time to allow the solids and the liquid to separate.

The wastewater usually divides in three layers inside the tank. Buoyant solids like grease and oil settle above forming the scum. Heavier solids perch at the base to form the layer of sludge. Finally, the mid layer consists of wastewater that has been clarified partially.

The scum and the sludge are retained inside the system tank, where they are worked on and broken down further by bacteria naturally contained in the wastewater. However, those solids which are hard to break any further remain in the tank until they are pumped. Besides, the clarified water leaves the tank and goes to a drain- field. The drain-field has perforated pipes and trenches which help in the distribution of the wastewater. Further treatment of the wastewater is achieved as the wastewater trickles slowly through the perforated pipes to the gravel and down to the soil.

After installing a system, it is important to carry out maintenance practices to ensure it remains in a good working condition and lasts longer. Regular inspection by a professional is necessary, and should be done at least every three years. Also, a household septic system should be pumped after three to five years. However, for systems with pumps, float switches or mechanical components, the inspection should be more often at least once a year.

Appropriate waste disposal practices need also to be observed so as to keep the system efficient. This is since all items that drain down will influence the working of the system. Whether they are wastes flushed from toilets, sinks or showers, they will have an impact on the functionality of the system.

Residents of Tolga QLD can reap huge benefits by putting up a septic system. This is because the cost of installing this system is significantly lower. This is due to the fact that you will not require to buy pipes to connect to a public sewer system.

The septic system is as well friendly to the environment. Their design lowers pollution by the process of natural filtration at the drain fields. Additionally, wastewater from households is filtered within the tank before release to the drain-fields. The water is further naturally filtered in the soil making it fit for use.
