How To Manage Raw Emotions Effectively

By Larry Murphy

A beautiful day can be ruined by a single act when you least expect it. This leaves you seething with raw emotions to the point of taking a nasty drastic action. Experts advise people to manage these feelings because they may cause a lot of damage. But how do you deal with them before you hurt people or damage property?

The simplest and easiest way to deal with rage is to take a deep breath. This can be done on spot and spontaneously. It gives you the precious delay that will stop you from taking an action that you will regret for the rest of your life. You will also be buying time to help you view the issue from a better perspective.

Put yourself in the shoes of your offender. Some reactions come from lack of deeper thought or failure to understand the circumstance that led the person into making the decision that you now consider atrocious. Taking a moment to think of the person allows you to have a better understanding of the situation. It dawns on you that your reaction could have been similar in the same circumstance.

Depart from the scene. This gives you the space to clean your thoughts and clear the mind over the situation at hand. Remaining at the scene means that your mind continues to be toxic. Negative feelings will boil to an uncontrollable point. Take a break and your reaction will not be as damaging as when you remain at the scene.

Take control of your mind. All actions and emotions come from whatever is going on in your mind. Control what you think about the person or situation. Master the thoughts that would cause you to act abruptly. Taking control of the mind saves you from taking a regrettable step.

Adapt controlled behavior or reaction to a situation. Controlled behavior or action can be attributed to the character of a person. It means that you have developed a way of dealing with similar situations. You are required to act as the bigger person in the circumstance. This remains the only way to make a reasonable decision.

Identify the feeling, acknowledge its existence and accept the entire scenario. This consciousness helps you to realize how close you are to taking a regrettable action. Since the feelings have been identified and accepted, they can easily be dealt with.

Soothe yourself. Each person has a way of calming his or her senses down. It could be by humming a song, taking a walk, tapping on the desk, watching the horizon or even talking to someone. The technique buys time and also helps you avoid drastic and regrettable actions. It takes practice and a lot of restraint to take control of your emotions.

Find a reliable support system that you can lean on. Some people talk to a friend, family, colleague or senior, among others, who help you offload the overflowing emotions. Such support enables you to make a more informed and level headed decision that you will not regret.
