How To Do Interior Design

By Anita Hale

If you are a good interior designer you will first assess what the room is to be used for. This will help to determine how to style it. It is important to listen to what your client wants. Ask them about their likes and dislikes in interior design. Ask them what sort of atmosphere they are trying to create. This will help you figure out the sort of lifestyle they lead. This information will be key to tackling any interior design project. This is because a designer must remember that the room should reflect their clients way of life.

All this information allows you to start seeking out more detailed answers. For example, if they are after a contemporary look then find out if they prefer plain furnishings or textures. Some people don't like carpets and would prefer floorboards and rugs. Ask about this too.

Another major factor of interior design is colour schemes. Before you decide upon a colour scheme you must consider which direction the room is facing. This will tell you how much natural light the room receives. The amount of light will be a big factor in determining what colour scheme suits the room. For example, a room that gets a lot of sunshine would benefit from a cool colour scheme.

Rooms that face north will need to be brightened up. This is because they get an incredibly small amount of natural light each day. But you can help create a sense of light by using warm colours such as pinks and oranges. If the room you are decorating faces south then you have the opposite scenario. These rooms could do with having cooler colours. Think about different tones of lilac and blue. If you want a less dramatic look, go for neutral colours.

The rooms that get the most natural light are those that face east to west. This is because they get light from both the rising and setting sun. You shouldn't try and fight this natural light by introducing too much colour. Instead, opt for whites like ivory and magnolia. You can use furnishings to inject colour into the room.

When you introduce furnishings into the room you must think about walkways and heating points. You don't want your stylish sofa to actually block the path through the room. Additionally, you don't want to have your furniture sitting up against the radiators either. The important thing is to create conversation points. This effectively means that people can sit comfortably and be able to talk easily with each other. So make sure your furnishings are with conversing distance of one another. The final point is to never angle all your furniture at the television. This will make your tv the focal point of the room and detract from all your lovely decoration.
