Find Out What Works Best In Gardening

By Arnel Almire

You want to create a healthy and fresh organic garden. The timing is perfect, and it is time for you to begin. The following tips can help you realize your plans for your garden.

Brighten up your flower beds with annuals and biennials. These types of flowers grow at high speed, which gives you more flexibility in changing the look of your flower beds as the seasons change. You can also use these flowers to fill gaps between shrubs or perennials. Notable varieties include cosmos, rudbeckia, petunia, hollyhock, marigold and sunflower.

Use natural pest control when possible. Planting marigolds or onions around the border of your vegetable garden will help repel slugs. Wood ash around your tree will help you keep pests away as well. These methods prevent use of harsh chemicals.

Start your peas in a protected indoors environment rather than outside. When the plants are started inside, the seeds will have an easier time germinating. The seedling sprouts will be heartier, giving them a better chance to grow into a healthy adult plant capable of rebuffing diseases. After the seedlings have grown strong indoors, it will be time for you to transplant them to outdoor beds.

Plant cool-weather edibles in the fall. A pumpkin makes a great container, and costs less than a clay pot. Clean out the pumpkin just like you would if you were making a jack o'lantern. Spray Wilt-Pruf inside the pumpkin and along its edges so that the pumpkin won't rot. Once this is done, you are ready to plant!

If you want to keep your garden free of pests, start with healthy soil! Healthy and well-nourished plants will be hardier and therefore better able to prevent pests from taking hold. So give your garden a kick start by beginning with a healthy batch of natural and organic soil.

You can help your plants resist disease by spraying them with aspirin water. Dissolve one and one-half aspirins into two gallons of cold water, and use it to fortify your plants. You can simply spray them with the mixture to help aid them in fighting off diseases. Be sure to repeat this process every two or three weeks.

You can use boiling water to get rid of weeds naturally. A boiling pot of water is one the best and safest herbicides you can find. Pour boiling water over the weeds to kill them, but make sure not to pour the water over any plants you don't want to kill. Boiling water damages the weed roots and will inhibit future growth.

To keep pests away, you can use plants in the garden or other natural materials. Planting marigolds or onions around the border of your garden will repel slugs. Wood ash, when used like mulch, can keep away pests after it is spread around a tree base and shrub seedlings. By utilizing these methods, you will not have to apply chemical pesticides on your vegetation.

You should think about planting evergreens that yield berries in your garden. This will keep your garden colorful, even during those months when other plants are not growing. Some examples of evergreens that produce berries and color in the wintertime are the American Holly, Cranberrybush, the Winterberry and the Common Snowberry.

Use cologne or other items with a distinct scent to keep your canine out of the landscaping. This kind of scent is going to mask the scents your dog is attracted to. If your dog has no interesting smell to follow, the garden will not be a tempting place.

Gardening can be a fun and easy hobby once you have laid some of the groundwork in place. With these tips, and enough practice, you too can craft a beautiful and enjoyable garden.
