Crown molding is a type of installation mostly applied to a finished edge. The result of a molding is a great creation with an elegant shape. Most crown molding are found in walls, pilasters, ceilings and trims where the walls reach the ceilings. Any decorative transition in the wall and ceiling are done by most crown molding installers. However, choosing the right molding for to a room is often difficult. There are problems in looking for the right materials, sizes, profiles and colors that would be quite difficult for most homeowners who have no experience in this task. The crown moldings are mostly concentrating on the materials used. There are many kinds of materials available and one of the most common materials are medium density fiber boards, plasters, woods and polyurethanes. The wood is the number one of the list, since it has also different species like the mahogany, pine and oak. It has also many profiles such as stained, painted and veneered.

However, the problem of most woods is the sensitive components and changes in the temperature and humidity makes it a problem with its composition. It may cause expanding, cracking and shrinking. Another kind is the Oak. This is a hardwood and best when stained, varnished and clear coated to emphasize its uniqueness, richness and its pronounced grain. The same with oak, other woods like cedar, mahogany, maple and hemlock are utilized for the moldings. These are usually unpainted and show its natural beauty.

Medium density fiber boards are made from sawdust fibers and resins. It has different profiles and perfect the same as a painted trim. It is inexpensive than the traditional types. It is also no liability for some woods to crack, shrink and expand.

The polyurethane kind of materials has great advantages. They are more likely to warp, crack and expand. However, it can avoid alteration effects for a temperature effect. This makes every element to be durable and to prevent insects.

The plaster types are mostly custom made and can only be installed by professionals. It is commonly used for most walls in having a unique and different sculpted profile or shape. However, its disadvantage is its expensive cost. For those owners who can afford to buy these types, they are also assured to achieve a great result.

There are several rules when choosing moldings. The most important thing, it could match to the space of the room. Installers have the knowledge to this job and by using the guidelines, homeowners must find the right moldings to match any small or large space.
