Erosion Control Companies Help To Save The Planet

By Gregory Stone

It is no secret that the planet is under severe pressure. Non renewable natural resources are plundered, water sources and the very air that humans need to live are polluted and the soil is poisoned and abused. Eroding soil can be the result of natural processes but it is mostly human endeavours that cause valuable soil to erode and to become barren. Luckily, erosion control companies can do much to either prevent it from happening or to rehabilitate soil that has already eroded.

When the fertile top layer of soil is removed, the remaining soil is extremely vulnerable to eroding agents such as the wind and water. This remaining soil is not fertile and cannot support vegetation. This means that it cannot serve as a habitat for birds, insects, wildlife and indigenous plants. Furthermore, such sites are very vulnerable to landslides and mudslides that cause even more damage to the surrounding soil.

All forms of life on earth depend upon the availability of enough fertile soil. Unfortunately human activities such as construction and mining as well as unsustainable farming methods keep eroding more and more soil. If something is not done, there will come a point where there is simply not enough soil to grow sufficient crops and natural foods to feed humanity and all the other creatures that need to feed.

The good news is that there is much that can be done to prevent soil from eroding and even to rehabilitate badly eroded sites. Experts can help developers, mining companies and farmers to plan their activities in such a way that the valuable soil will not suffer unduly. They can help their clients to maintain or reintroduce vegetation that serves to protect the soil from eroding due to water or wind.

Businesses that specialize in repairing the soil and in preventing damage use a wide variety of equipment and techniques. Humble sandbags are used to create terraces when establishing new vegetation, for example, protecting the site from flooding. Silt barriers prevent mudslides from developing and wind barriers help to protect vulnerable sites against the potentially devastating effect of strong winds.

Businesses that employ experts in this field can be of great value to farmers and developers by identifying sites that are prone to erosion. In many cases it is perfectly possible to avoid farming or building on sites that are vulnerable by simply opting for a less vulnerable site. Thankfully, many countries now require an environmental impact report before permission is giving to proceed with developments.

If all developers act responsibly and hire the services of an erosion expert before they disturb the soil much damage can be prevented from the outset. The cost of hiring such experts should be part of the budget of every new development. Many organizations utilize the land without even realizing that they are causing serious damage. Hiking trails, for example, can lead to eroded soil.

The future of humankind is bound to the future of the planet. Once the planet can no longer sustain human life due to a lack of fertile soil, healthy air and pure water, human life will cease. The importance of maintaining the sustainability of the planet simply cannot be overemphasised.
