The University Of Alabama And Learning Centre

By Bob Stuart

The University of Alabama, the state of Alabama's oldest public university, is a senior comprehensive doctoral-level institution. The University was established by the constitutional provision under statutory mandates and authorizations. Its mission is to advance the intellectual and social condition of the people of the state through quality programs of teaching, research and service.

In 1818, the federal government authorized Alabama Territory to set aside a township for the establishment of a "seminary of learning." President Monroe signed the enabling act for statehood on March 2, 1819, and Alabama was officially admitted to the Union on Dec. 14, 1819, and a second township added to the grant. On December 18, 1820, the seminary was established officially and named "The University of the State of Alabama." Tuscaloosa, then the state's capital, chosen as the University's home. On April 18, of 1831 inaugural ceremonies held and the University opened. By May 28, 52 students had enrolled. The campus consisted of seven buildings: two faculty houses, two dormitories, the laboratory, the hotel (now Gorgas House), and the Rotunda.

The university opened in April 1831 with four faculty and 94 students. Freshmen took Latin, Greek, geography, English grammar, history, reading, orthography or composition, and mathematics. The first years of the university did not run smoothly, however. The first president, Alva Woods brought with him a New Englander's sense of strict duty and discipline that clashed with the students' southern frontier sense of freedom. As a result, numerous disciplinary problems and conflicts occurred between students and faculty members, including an incident in 1836 in which more than 40 students were suspended for attending a circus.

The University of Alabama is the first in the state to offer outlining classes. It was one of the five in the nation to do so and one of just a couple to have kept up accreditation always since national accreditation began in 1936. Ranked among the top 50 public universities in the nation in U.S. News and World Report’s annual college rankings for more than a decade, UA ranked 43rd among public universities in the 2016 rankings. Public Accounting Report’s 2014 rankings place UA’s Culverhouse School of Accountancy’s undergraduate and master’s programs eighth in the nation and the doctoral program 12th.

To advance the intellectual and social condition of the people of the State, the nation, and the world through the creation, translation, and dissemination of knowledge with an emphasis on quality programs of teaching, research, and service.Today enrollment at The University of Alabama reached a record high of 37,100 for fall 2015. The entering freshman class, at 7,211 students, is the largest and best qualified in UA history. More than one-third (36 percent) of the freshman class scored 30 or higher on the ACT, placing them in the top 5 percent of students taking the ACT. PRWeek Magazine has recognized the public relations program in The University of Alabama’s College of Communication and Information Sciences as one of the top five programs in the nation six times.

There is a barrage of cheap and inferior Alabama University flags being imported and sold, that do not comply with the flag statute. This is bad for a number of reasons. Imported flags are cheaply made and more importantly, the designs, materials, colors, and methods of printing do not compare well with the better quality, longer-lasting, and correctly designed flags made by American manufacturers. The Flag Company Inc specialized in flag designs offered a special edition of decals and flags to memorize the history of Alabama University flag for the future.
