How Silt Fence Installation Is Conducted

By Joshua Smith

When in need of a temporary sediment control device in your construction site, install silt fences. These devices are used mainly to protect the quality of water in nearby seas, lakes, river and streams from sedimentation of storm water runoff. They are widely installed these days on construction sites because of their simple design and low cost. The silt fence installation process is carried out in the following ways.

Silt fences only function properly if they are fixed alongside sediment traps and basins. When installed in this manner, they mitigate erosion of soil by holding sediments. The sediment traps act as a protective shield that captures soil particles and releases water. They have small openings that only permit water molecules to pass through.

Typical fencing items consist of a filter that is made of synthetic fabric. The filter is also stretched to a certain level in a long series of wooden or metal stakes. Consequently, these stakes are installed at the bottom of fencing items. The lower part of the synthetic filter is also trenched deep into the soil. This design permits water to flow through a fencing gadget. Large soil particles are also trapped in the device.

After a storm event, the synthetic fabric is usually altered to dislodge fine soil particles and enable water to flow. With respect to erosion and the protected watershed, large soil particles remain within the construction site. It reaches a point where the particles completely fill the fencing equipment hence the need for installing another boundary marker on top of the current one.

In some countries, the government sensitizes the use of reinforced fencing items. These items use synthetic fabric filters embedded with wire meshes. The main reason why wire meshes are embedded on the filters is to strengthen them and increase their resistance. Filters require resistance for them to withstand the pressure of sediments and water. However, when installed incorrectly, they are easily clogged with large soil particles.

Studies on fencing practices have concluded that silt fences are the best fencing devices, when categorized in terms of controlling erosion of sediments and protecting watersheds. Other studies conclude that excellent maintenance and repair practices increase the efficiency of these devices. If you have installed fencing gadgets around your construction area to prevent soil erosion, you need to maintain them frequently. Maintenance can be carried out by unclogging particles of soil that are stuck in the fabric filters.

These fencing devices can be installed in various ways. The most common technique used these days is the slicing technique. This technique ensures that sediments are properly held on the inner side of a construction site. The technique also allows soil to compact well hence strengthening the entire boundary marker. The efficiency of any fencing device is measured based on its ability to withstand hundreds of tones of soil particles.

The cost of installing siltation fences is based on factors such as length and width. For example, if you want to enclosure a large site with an ongoing construction, choose a longer fencing item. The length of the device should be proportional to the total perimeter of the site that is supposed to be fenced.
