Most Effective Dialogue Facilitation Techniques For Hosts

By Gregory Cox

A discussion will only be as sweet and fruitful as the facilitator makes it to be. Good facilitation enables guests to freely express themselves and exhaust the topic at hand. There are excellent dialogue facilitation techniques that have turned ordinary persons into pro hosts. Here is a look at some of these techniques and how they can be used.

Behave like a traffic controller and not the pilot. A pilot takes control because he or she is the expert. A controller on the other hand allows the discussion to takes it course. Though you might be knowledgeable on the subject or might have a different point of view, you must allow other people to express themselves. This ensures that the discussion is not a one man show.

Set the rules or norms to be observed before beginning your discussion. A facilitator is in charge of maintaining order on any forum. This is the only way a sober discussion will happen. Set expectations like time, language, tone and how to capture the attention of a facilitator. Everyone will have to stick to these rules if the discussion is to be meaningful.

Pay attention to questions and not answers. It happens that you have an answer or opinion about the issue being discussed yet you are the facilitator. It means that you must focus on getting knowledge out of your panelists and not being the source of this knowledge. This ensures that you are engaged in genuine dialogue. If you contribute extensively, it will appear as though you were the guest.

Ask questions that are open ended and that will provoke a discussion. This makes your discussion conversational instead of question and answer or interrogation session. Incite the panelists to keep going using such phrases are How So, Tell Me More and What Followed, among others. This helps you avoid the one word answers that make discussions boring.

Construct a captivating conversations starter that will bring everyone on board into the same platform. Though there is the topic to be discussed, you do not jump straight into it. Find an easy discussion that will warm the floor and bring the minds of all participants into focus. The discussion can be general so that anyone can jump in in a fun and easy manner. Avoid topics that would be divisive or close out a section of the audience.

The discussion should feel like an invitation and not a situation where people are forced. This will be determined by the words you use. Words used should reflect an easy environment where participants can discuss and share openly. Facial expressions, subtle motions and eye contacts will tell you who is ready to take up the discussion. Find a tactic to tame the people who want to take over without putting them down.

Keep the discussion relevant even when other issues emerge. Every discussion has the potential of spinning out of control as new ideas emerge. When people are put on their defense, be ready to allow them redeem their image. Find an interesting ending that is also captivating and memorable.
