Basic Bit Shapes For Routed Wood Signs

By Jennie Sandoval

It is actually common for those people who are making routed wood signs to use different bit shapes according to their needs. One of the most popular bit shapes that they will have to use is the beading bit. This can be used to apply a rounded shape to the stock's edges. The said bits have a bearing tip that helps with riding along the edges as the stock is cut.

Some people might prefer the chamfer bit though. It is certainly important to use the said bit. He should know more about the purpose of the chamfer bit so that one can make precise decisions on whether he will have to use it or if he will have to leave it for later. It is entirely up to him, though.

There is the cove bit as well. While this might be similar to the other bits, the specialty of this kind of bit is that not only does it apply rounded profiles he can also make it concave. It is important for him to know at least this much about the cove bit if he wants to have a better item to use when making the sign.

There is the straight-cutting bit too. The person should know that there is quite a number of methods he should use when it comes to cutting a dado profile. The dado profile is usually a square channel in the center of the stock. The straight-cutting bit will help with this.

At some point, he might end up with the dovetail bits too. This is helpful for him making the item since this allows him to make dadoes and tapered rabbets. One of the distinguishing features of the said bit is that it actually possesses no bearing tips at all.

Another one is the ogee bit. The person should already know by now that this bit that he has to use if he is dealing with the stock's center, and even the edges. For the bearing tip, this is just the same with any others.

Make use of the rabbeting bit. This is the dado on the edge of the stock that he is working on. It should be easy for the person to ride along the edge of his stock along with the bearing tip. The rabbeting bit is a specially designed bit shape that he may be able to use.

It is for the best if one knows how to use the round nose bits too. This is the kind of bit that should allow him to plunge some flutes right at the middle of the said stock. This is the only difference that this type of bit has to its counterpart which is the cove bit.

There is also the roundover bit. Know that this bit that should help the person make rounded profiles. With this bit, he can make the job a whole lot easier. He should be able to make the routed wood signs with this easily.
