A Look At Legal Paternity Testing

By Lora Jones

It can be very difficult for you and your child when there are doubts about the identity of the father. Arguments and rejection are only some of the things you and your child will have to deal with. If you are in a situation that calls for the confirmation of the identity of the childs biological father, legal paternity testing can be requested.

The test is done by taking dna samples from both parent and child. DNA or deoxyribonucleic acid is unique and contains genetic information. If there are enough markers between the two samples, then they can be considered a match and in effect, the male is indeed the father. The test is supposed to be highly accurate.

To do the test, one would need to obtain a kit. Once samples have been obtained, you can send it to the lab which will then process the samples. The kit is not expensive. Aside from paying for the kit, there are fees that have to be paid for the processing. Take the time to check what the rates are at several facilities.

There are differences in the way this tests are being conducted. It will depend on whether the test is for informational purposes only or if it has to be utilized in a case. If it is the latter, then certain procedures will have to be followed to prevent tampering in the samples or in the results.

There is no difference in the accuracy of the results. The laboratory will still process the samples in the same manner whether you just want the test for confirmation or if you want it for a case. Examine your needs carefully so you will not have to repeat the test in the future.

The test is useful for a variety of cases. For example, it can be a piece of evidence when someone is applying for adoption or if someone stands to inherit money or properties. It may be needed to determine who is responsible for supporting the child. If the test has to be used in any of these cases, then you should then you should start looking for qualified facilities in your area.

If the test results have to stand in court, then there should be someone authorized to witness the sampling. The individuals who are tested have to show proof of their identity. The samples will be monitored closely to ensure that it reaches the facility with no tampering. Processing will then begin and the results will be released thereafter.

Tests can either be conducted at your own home or you can go to a facility to get tested. There is a waiting period before you can get those results and the length of this period may differ among facilities. You have to consider the location of the individuals especially if they are not in the same area. You will also have to schedule when the samples will be taken.

Legal paternity testing is done to verify who is the father of a child. The use of dna in this type of tests means that the results are highly accurate. When the results are to be legally binding, the integrity of the process, from start to finish will be ensured. This is more expensive compared to those that are only being done for peace of mind.
