Importance Of The Right Frame Material For Cape Cod Windows

By Freida McCall

Cape cod windows are symmetrical, simple and yet elegant. These are multi paned and are very useful in it that they let in good amounts of light, air and sunshine. They keep your living spaces looking bright and cheerful, and make for healthy, air homes. However, choosing what kind of frame you should have them installed in is not very easy. Here is a small guide which will show you what kind of frames are best for these and will make your property look good and add value to it.

Throughout the ages, wood has been the material of choice for frames. This is because wood is available in abundance, in a number of varieties, is easy to shape and work with. You can paint or stain wood to be just the color that goes well with your home. The only disadvantage here is that termites, rain etc. Take their toll on wood, which means it requires plenty of looking after.

A lot of people also prefer to use aluminium frames with cape cod windows. This is because this metal is very light and hence easily transported, it is easy to work with and quite durable especially along the coast line where rust of metals can be a problem. This particular metal is rust free. However, a big problem that was discovered with this material is the loss of heat energy from the interior of the house. In cold climates, this is not desirable at all, and so, makes aluminium a poor choice.

Next, you can think of installing cape cod windows with vinyl frames. These are very good with conserving energy as compared to aluminium, and will definitely help with keeping your electricity bills low as heating will not take up as much power. These are also better than wood at keeping the interiors of the house warm.

Vinyl frames, when used with cape cod windows in warm weather, however, can be a disaster. This is because vinyl loses its strength and shape when the environment it is in is very hot. This means you will have to replace frames often.

Becoming increasingly popular these days is fiber glass. It is advantageous in many ways. For example, it is light, but still strong enough to be resistant to wear and tear and the weather. It is scratch proof to a great extent and requires very little maintenance.

The drawback is that fiber glass frames are not available everywhere, and they are certainly pretty expensive even where they are available. With the passage of time, though, it is expected that they will get cheaper as more and more people begin to switch to them or to use them in their houses.

In the end, remember that is necessary to have good windows and frames in your house. Not only because they look good and add value to your property, but also because they help regulate the interchange of heat energy between your house and the surroundings, and thus affect your electricity bill. Cape cod windows should be well maintained at all times.
