Useful Tips For Gardening With Great Success

By Kathleen Burch

Learn some tips to assist you in cultivating a beautiful garden for your personal enjoyment, your business or your family. These tips will help you save money on equipment, and select the best methods to use in your garden.

Having bees in your garden can really help it to thrive because they will pollinate your fruits and vegetables for you. Some bees are destructive, as is the case with carpenter bees that bore into wood to make their nests. Most other bees should be allowed to live freely in your garden for maximum benefits.

If you want to keep dogs our of your garden, take some aftershave, old perfume, or any other scented item and spray the grass around the area. This will help mask the scents that attract your dog, and will make your garden a less interesting place for your pet to be.

Learn the proper way to handle chemicals, and the right way to use garden tools. If you don't do this, you could cause unnecessary skin irritations, which are very painful. Protect your plants and yourself by knowing how to correctly use all of your gardening implements.

Whenever you are planting a veggie garden, it is vital that you place them in a location where sun shines down on them for six or more hours per day. Many vegetables need about this much sun to grow quickly. This is true for flowers as well.

In the hottest time of the day, most vegetables are less firm; even the act of harvesting the veggies may cause bruising. Vegetables and fruits should always be cut from the vine, not twisted; twisting subjects a plant to needless stress.

Rid your garden of snails by spraying them with a concoction of water and ammonia. The ammonia will not hurt your precious plants, and it will later convert to beneficial nitrogen. Ammonia will kill any snails that are wreaking havoc on your garden. Spray this mixture on a daily basis to get the best results.

When mowing the lawn, don't mow the grass all the way down to the root. If you let your grass grow, the roots will go deeper and make your lawn more resistant to dryness. The shorter the grass, the shallower the roots, which makes the lawn more likely to develop brown patches.

Consider using a chicken tractor to fertilize your future garden area. A chicken tractor functions as a portable chicken coop with a small sheltered area and open floor. A chicken tractor allows hens to eat insects, vegetables and other food, all the while depositing waste that becomes fertilizer for the soil. After an area is fertilized, pull the chicken tractor to a different area.

Remember to place a layer of mulch over the soil around your vegetables, approximately 2 inches deep. The organic mulch will keep moisture in the soil for a little longer. Mulch will help a lot in preventing weeds from growing. This will save you a ton of time and work.

You simply need to do your homework, spend some time working outdoors, and cultivate your patience. However, while you watch something grow that you planted, the satisfaction will make it worthwhile.
