What Is Self Confidence Or Esteem

What is self confidence? It is the opinion and value a person holds of themselves. It often shows in the manner they carry themselves, their actions and the way they talk. It is the level of confidence someone displays when it comes to their judgment, power, decision making, etc.

A person's attitude in their life plays a great role in their level of happiness, performance and health in life. Personality starts developing during childhood when an individual is still growing and surrounded by certain people who shape their lives. It can be influenced largely by how guardians and people around treat you.

The child looks into the eyes and faces of other people to find out whether he or she is attractive, safe, funny, intelligent and secure. The level of personal acceptance is largely influenced by how much a person feels they are accepted by the most important people in their lives. The attitude individuals have towards themselves is largely determined by the attitudes they think other people have towards them.

A person's confidence is raised when they believe others think highly of them. Personal acceptance is a base point on which esteem is built. There are ways in which a person can develop confidence.

Self Disclosure - This has to do with letting go of things that may have happened in the past by telling at least one person about it. It deals with letting go of unhappy memories by disclosing them to someone who will not judge or make you feel guilty about them. This is the base of psychotherapy, psychiatry and psychology.

Awareness: This is another stage of personality development. It is only when someone can share what they are truly feeling and thinking with someone else that they can become aware of those thoughts and emotions. It is only when they can express themselves in words to someone else who will simply listen without commenting and criticizing, that they truly understand themselves.

It helps people to understand who they are, and understand that they may not be the worst person in the world. The entire being is fully defined and understood through this. This helps them to start believing in themselves and what they can do.

Acceptance: After going through disclosure to awareness, acceptance is the next thing a person needs to do, by accepting themselves for who they are. Accept your strengths and weaknesses, good and bad points, with frailties of a normal human being. Then stand back and see yourself honestly with no need to explain or defend, accept that you are not perfect but all in all, a good person.

So, what is self confidence? It is an overall opinion of personal worth whether positive or negative. It precipitates success or failure, development and progress. A positive thinking, environment and right people plays a great role in ascertaining how high or low ones esteem is.
