Try a Cuban Cigar on Holiday in Cuba

By Steve Alexander

Cuba is famous for producing the best cigars in the world alongside its weather, rum and Latin rhythm. Cuban cigars are still cheaper in their native land than anywhere else in the world, although with high quality comes a high price tag. Make your holidays to Havana complete though by sampling one of the world's best cigars.

The best-known cigar shop/smoking lounge in Havana is Casa del Habano, located behind the Partagas cigar factory, where connoisseurs from all over the world meet over their shared passion for cigars. The shop also sells single cigars, so visitors can sit down in the cosy smoking lounge in the back and sample one of Cuba's trademark goods.

La Casa del Tabaco in Club Havana can also be found in Havana, amongst its 30 or so shops selling cigars, most of which offer expert knowledge on the subject. Located in the former Havana Biltmore Yacht and Country Club just outside the city centre, this exclusive shop is a paradise for cigar-lovers.

Many of the city's hotels have shops selling Cuban cigars. One of the most respected and best stocked is the cigar-themed Hostel del Habano, located on the first floor of the Conde de Villanueva hotel. With an elegant cigar display case and a smokers' lounge, the shop has made its name for its knowledgeable staff and high-quality standards.

Many people choose to buy duty-free cigars at the airport before they leave as a box of 25 Cohibas cigars can cost around 500 CUC (over 300). Always carry an official receipt of purchase to be safe as limits at customs can vary. On your holidays to Cuba, one thing always to remember when buying cigars is never buy them from sellers on the street. The goods will almost certainly be fake, even though the price might be appealing.
