Have a sinking feeling that you are being watched? Well guess what, those ads really are following you!
If you have ever visited a website and then later noticed that ads for the particular product or service you just looked at are popping up all over the place, then you are being retargeted to!
Maybe you thought this was just a coincidence or a result of you being more aware of a particular product or service after you may have investigated it.
But alas, in the online world it is not quite so random.
A common tactic being used by advertisers is after you visit their website to show their ads to you multiple times as you navigate across other websites. This practice is called Retargeting.
This is accomplished using cookies, which are tracking tags placed in your browser when you visit a website. This tells the website which product or service you were looking at and allows them to use ad space available on other websites to display their products to you.
Retargeting is a great way for advertisres to get their message in front of you even when you are no longer on their specific website. For a low cost, they can display their ads on other websites as long as that cookie is present in your browser.
Due to the effectiveness of retargeting, more and more advertisers are hopping on board. That means that for the consumer the same products and services will be appearing more and more as they navigate the internet.
Could this be considered internet stalking? Well sure, but overall it is an unobtrusive way to keep an advertisers brand in front of you even when you leave their site. The nice part is that if you are being tailed by ads you don't care to see anymore, a simple clearing of your browser cookies will delete these for you. Or at least they will be deleted until you visit the next site that is using a retargeting strategy!
