Guide On Buying The Suitable Gas Logs For Your Home

By Doris Rivas

There came a time when fireplaces are indispensable in homes because it is what people back then rely on to keep them warm during cold climates. But with the invention of modern household heating systems, traditional fireplaces gradually lost its popularity mainly because of maintenance issues. But modern heating systems could never give the warmth that fireplaces provide, the kind of warmth that does not simply warm and calm the body but also the heart and soul. Fortunately, with the invention of gas logs, people could have fireplaces without worrying about its tiresome maintenance.

The popularity of these modern fireplaces has grown rapidly and for a reason. Not only do these fireplaces provide warmth but it also serves as an exquisite ornamental accent in homes. Today, several kinds are already available in the market. But this makes it hard for some to choose the best one for their homes.

But choosing the right set of logs for your home is not really that hard. All you need to do is take in to consideration a couple of things first before going into the appliance store. First of all, you need to know the difference between the two types of these logs which are the vented and vent free.

The vented types require wood burning chimneys that have open chimneys. Because of this set up, majority of the heat produced by the logs goes to the chimney. But the good thing about the vented kind is they generate realistic looking flames. The vent free ones on the other hand do not require an open flue. In this kind of set up, most of the heat goes into the room.

The next thing to consider is the size of logs you want to buy. This will depend on the size of your fireplace so you have to know its dimensions. The measurements of the logs you will buy are usually printed in the product label. But of course you can always ask the seller or check first the online catalogs to get more detailed specifications.

Next is you should decide on what type of control you want. For vent free types, you can choose from manual, thermostat, or remote controlled. If you are on a tight budget, then you can for the manually controlled for it is the cheapest among the three. The thermostatically controlled type could provide you with extra features but if you really value convenience and does not mind spending a little more, then the remote controlled one is right for you.

Lastly, you should be familiar with the term BTU. BTU stands for British thermal unit and simply put, it is a measure of how much heat your logs could produce. Choosing the right BTU rating will depend on the size of the room you want to heat. Of course you would not want to turn your room into toaster so know first the dimensions of your room and ask the seller what is the best BTU rating for it.

Since gas logs are possible fire hazards, you should also take necessary measures to control accidents and avoid injury or property loss. Though these devices have gone through several quality assurance procedures to ensure safe usage, it is always better to be safe than sorry.
