Useful Information About Gas Logs

By Mamie Conrad

When it gets cold, most people light a fire to keep warm. These fires are mostly lit in fireplaces. Traditionally, regular firewood is used in fireplaces but thanks to technological advancements, gas logs have been developed. They look exactly like normal firewood but they burn differently. They can be fueled by either natural gas or propane. It is entirely up to the consumer to decide which one he or she wants. They have specially designed firebox cabinets.

The unvented and vented are the two distinct types of gas logs that are currently available. The vented ones are probably the least popular. They are mostly used for decorative purposes rather than production of heat because they look like a real fire. They also emit the same amount of heat as a similar sized fire.

The main stumbling block with the vented ones is that due to their yellow flame, they produce soot. Soot may stick to walls causing them to stain, which is very unattractive. One will therefore need to clean up regularly. This may be quite an uphill task especially for those who have busy schedules.

The second type is the unvented ones. The unvented ones burn with a flame that is quite similar to the flame one would see when he or she lights a gas burner. It is generally less attractive. The biggest advantage the unvented ones have over the vented ones is that they do not produce soot. This will save one a lot of time and energy because the fireplace does not need to be cleaned regularly. They also produce more heat as compared to vented ones.

One shortcoming of the unvented type is the health risk involved. It is not advisable to use them too often. At times, they may vary the air conditions which may be hazardous.

When one wants to construct a fireplace, it is advisable for one to choose these fireboxes as opposed to a regular fireplace. The benefits of embracing this new technology stretch far and wide. First, through the use of these fireboxes, one would aid in the preservation of the habitats of animals that reside in trees such as birds and other insects because less trees will be felled to provide firewood. This will also bring about environmental conservation. One will also reduce his or her workload. He or she will not need to clean up after having a fire because there will be no ash. The space that people had set aside for firewood storage can then be used for different things because the fireboxes do not firewood.

A small number of precautionary measures should be taken when installing a firebox. First, one should always ensure a professional does it. Second, one should ensure that whoever is responsible for the installation follows the instructions given. It is better safe than sorry.

Gas logs have proven to be uncommonly convenient. One does not need to go through the trouble of felling trees and splitting firewood to make a fire so that he or she can be warm during chilly weather. All one needs to do is turn a knob. Some are controlled by remote, so getting heat can be as effortless as changing a channel on television.
