A Short Overview Of Popular German Dog Names

By Heinz Kaufmann

If you're searching for a unique but fashionable name for your pet German Shepherd, then German names are ideal. Interestingly enough the Germans don't call their pets with German names. They are looking for more generic names like Asterix, Cool Catch, Blitz and Lightning. These names are fascinating and unique.

First stop can be on a handbook of German names. You would probably get an handful of ideas from it. Secondly, you should consider some famous German names such as Mozart, Beethoven and Elfriede. There is nothing wrong with giving your pet a non-German name but then if you are not from Germany and you want your pet's name to sound unique, then probably giving a German name would be one of the best ideas.

You can also base the name in accordance with your German Shepherd's character. Why not name him Adler which is the German term for "eagle" if he has a carefree personality.

Calling them after their temperament is probably still the best option. Some names in Germany such as Bello and Hasso are now considered unremarkable. In the US, these two tend to be the same as clich pet names such as Fido, Tabby or Spot. Among the commonly used German Shepherd names include Franz, Babe, Chaos, Charlie, Angel, Ajax and Cheese.

Another tip is to name them after literary personalities and intellectuals. A bunch of them can be considered. You can choose from Siggi, Kafka, Goethe and Freud instead of just naming them simple names such as Sigmund.

For lovers of music names such as Amadeusor Mozart and even names of German pop singers which include the well known Austrian Falco or the band musician Udo Lindenberg and musician Nena are some nice options. If you like German literature then why not call your male German Shepherd dog Siegfried and a good option for the female German Shepherd is Kriemhild.

If you want a very light name then why not fix on Asterix for a very witty puppy from the cartoon series by the same name. In fact a strong and large dog like the German Shepherd can easily be named Obelix if it shows a happy-go-lucky nature and loves eating. In fact the dog in the cartoon character was named in German also.

There are also German terms that exhibit specific character such as the word Adalhard which means strong and noble. Baldur, on the other hand, means brave which is perfect for a daring pet.

There are usual names that tend to signify some traits which you can use as pet names. Some of these are Traute for trusted, Hugo which stands for smart, or Heidi for noble female dogs. You can also consider the name Reinhard for a physically outstanding and healthy dog. In Germany, these are not popular person names but they would sound exclusive for your canines.
