Having EMP Protection Is Vital For Survival

By Paulette Short

We have now become highly obsessed with our electronic products. They control all aspects from our main water supply to daily communication. In reality, our way of life will be totally changed with out them. For that reason, finding out how to protect gadgets during an electromagnetic pulse is smart. Below is a bit more information regarding EMP protection and the best way to store devices.

Experts estimate that as many as 90% of the population could die within one year of an electromagnetic pulse. There are a couple of different types. The first is man-made and comes from a nuclear bomb. The second one comes from the sun and is considered natural. Both of these sources can destroy any electrical device that it comes in contact with. This includes our electrical grid.

However, this type of attack is survivable as long as folks understand how to prepare for it. There will be no electricity, no lights, and no running water. America's extreme dependence on electrical devices coupled with our centralized sources of energy means life as we know it will cease to exist. This kind of event is instantaneous, so the damage will happen at once.

The most important devices to protect are generators. These can supply basic electricity for basic survival. For instance, a small generator can run a water pump. It can also charge batteries for things like cell phones and portable radios. The best way to protect a generator is to use a Faraday shield.

This sort of shielding it is possible to make using any appropriate conducting material. A stove uses this sort of shielding to defend users from radiation. In fact, elevators were created to defend its occupants from electromagnetic fields generated once the elevator is moving. What is needed is ingenuity and creativity to make a shield.

Radios and communication gadgets such as satellite cell phones are also items that can be protected. They are small, which means heavy aluminum foil can protect them. However, do not let the foil touch the items. Instead, wrap them in cloth or paper first. Then, apply three layers of heavy aluminum foil. This should do the trick.

Another great idea is to use an aluminum trashcan. Line it with several heavy layers of cloth. Then take the items above and place them in the can. Just about any non-conductive material can be used to line the inside of the trashcan. Make as many layers as possible so that the electronics are properly insulated from the metal sides. This will provide a second layer protection and keep the aluminum wrapped items insulated from the sides of the aluminum can.

Saving your electronics from a devastating EMP can mean the difference between surviving comfortably or living miserably after an attack. It doesn't take much preparation and the rewards can be immense. Vital communication and information lines can be maintained. This is important after a disaster. So is having running water.

These are only some suggestions about EMP protection. There are actually lots of websites and books out there to help families plan for such an event. And, it's not going to take much cash to be ready.
