Keeping Your Cedar Fence In Good Condition

By Gloria Gardner

A cedar fence Lockport can give you privacy and protection with the added bonus of increasing the beauty of your home. To keep it in good condition, cleaning and other maintenance steps can be undertaken. Here are a few tips to keep it properly cared for.

You need to keep plants from growing over it. Trees could be a potential source of damage especially in winter when branches are prone to break. Keep those trees trimmed to prevent this. Leaves and twigs can also get stuck in between cracks and this can cause stains or rots. Rid the boards of this as well.

Since the wood has to deal with various elements, it needs protection. A waterproof sealant will do the trick to avoid splinters and cracks. Two applications should be enough but be sure to let the sealer dry in between applications. Apply this every several years.

Over time, your wood will become dirty and have grime on it. Clean it to achieve better appearance. You can do this manually or just rent a pressure washer for less hassle. You can rent one at small charge and request a demonstration from the personnel for instructions. Ideally, two thousand psi is enough to prevent damage.

Nails and screws can also corrode over time and cause stains. Replace this with non corrosive kinds like stainless steel or aluminum. They can cost more but you will avoid the inconvenience of replacing them and cleaning the stains.

It is important to replace any rotting boards as soon as you can. If there is damage to one board, it can easily weaken the others. Do not forget to seal and stain these replacements as well. After some time, the new boards will look just as aged as the others.

Finally, be alert for any signs of mold and mildew on your Cedar Fence Lockport. To remove these, just put four ounces of oxygen bleach in a gallon of hot water and use this solution to scrub the wood. It is important to do this since they can weaken the boards cause discoloration.
