Winter Florida Vacation Ideas

By Shane McConnell

Many people think a Florida vacation is just a trip to Disney World or the beach and this is a misconception that needs changing. While Disney does encompass a great deal of area with its theme parks in Orlando, it can seem as though there is nothing else to do. There is so much more to Florida than this popular attraction and some spots are definite "must sees" for families and singles alike.

Orlando is the perfect place to get away from the cold as the sun is always shining and it does not get very cold. The one theme park that is a must is SeaWorld, but do not just see Shamu and other marine life and then leave. Discovery Cove is a more hands on way to get close to the marine life by snorkeling and hanging out with the dolphins. Take a close look at the man-made coral reef or get some sun while rafting on a river.

Make a plan to stay away from the everyday attractions and visit something just a bit off the beaten path on Florida. Gatorland is the perfect spot and offers a great deal of fun for all. Check out the petting zoo or ride the train around the park after looking at the wide variety of 'gators and crocs.

Ripley's Believe it or Not! Odditorium is a great place to kill a few hours and is perfect for those who enjoy the macabre. With so many different displays, there is bound to be something that everyone who visits can enjoy and get excited about. Peek at the real human shrunken heads or check out Van Gogh's 20 foot long wall mural.

A more hands on place to visit that is also educational would be the Orlando Science Center, where you should plan on spending the day. Kids and adults can learn more about the human body, the solar system, and lasers. There is also a planetarium and IMAX theater with the best in picture and audio quality.

Choosing a vacation destination in the winter is not difficult when there is so much to do on any Florida vacation. If you want to skip the normal Disney World lines and crowds, try the attractions that are off the beaten path. The weather is always nice, even during the darkest part of winter, so you can leave the parkas at home. Let your friends enjoy their fireplaces, pack up the kids, and head to Florida to warm up this winter.
