The Finest Colt Starting Experts Use The Best Techniques

By Dale Peck

Equines are simply amazing animals. They are wise and intelligent with the most fantastic natures. They learn easily and with the right guidance will trust the human to ride him without hurting him. Colt starting is one of the most amazing things anyone can experience.

Finding out your mare is pregnant is fantastic news and a reason to celebrate. A new baby in the barn is something everyone looks forward to, and as the months go on the excitement gets stronger. Everyone is eager to bring him into this wonderful world and to show him all the love and affection he so dearly deserves. Everyone will love and cherish him and teach him to be the beautiful animal he is destined to be.

Once he is old enough it will be time for some training. Many folk squabble about when a horse is supposed to be backed and trained. The idea is that one should wait until he is about three. Of course this gives him a lot of time to be a foal and grow up, and the sooner you get him trained the better.

As he grows older he will no doubt turn into a beautiful horse who will be pampered and loved by all who meet him. Early contact with human is vital if you intend to train him for riding in any discipline. The more you have to do with him the better as this way he will not be afraid of you when the time comes for him to begin full training.

It is very easy to destroy a horse if you do not train him properly right from the beginning. The idea is to do this gradually and in his own time. It is not advisable to rush a pony into training as this may sour him and he will be difficult to coach. No one wants a difficult horse and you should do your best to be as kind when it comes to teaching him.

He will also begin to feel comfortable around you as he sees you working with his mother. When you do eventually approach him with some kind training gear he will not be completely afraid of it as he will have gained trust in you not to hurt him. This is the easiest way to go about getting him used to the idea of doing work in the ring with you at a later stage.

Of course when you begin training, you do not want to subject him to too many gadgets and tack so the less you do to him the better. Simple voice training in the beginning is advisable and only at a later stage should you try to put him onto a lead rein. Once he is comfortable with this you can then later put him into a bitless bridle.

A very good idea is to try to get some of the bitless training done. This is a new concept and in many countries many of the equine federations are encouraging the use of bridles without disciplining bits. This is a great idea and they are experiencing a lot of success with these. Colt starting needs to be done as gently as possible and if you go bitless from the beginning, you may well be able to ride your horse competitively without any bit whatsoever.
