When you want to make your living in the construction business, you have to lay the groundwork. First you need a comprehensive business plan and a detailed budget. The cost of getting your licenses and certifications need to be an line item in your budget. A Contractors License School In Los Angeles can give you some practical guidelines.

In California, you must be licensed to accept a contracting job valued at more than 500 dollars, including materials and labor. Corporations, partnerships, LLCs, and individuals all must be licensed. If you worked in the states of Utah, Nevada, or Arizona for 5 or more concurrent years, reciprocal licensing may be possible.

There is an official application that must be completed. You can fill it out in any of three ways. If you're comfortable with a computer, you may complete the form online and then print it out. For people who would rather fill the form out by hand, you can print it and complete. If you don't have access to a computer, you can call and ask the licensing board to mail you a form. If you do your application by hand, you must use black or blue ink.

Your application will not be accepted for consideration unless you've got a valid Social Security number and are eighteen or older. You are required to pass an FBI and Department of Justice background check. To do this, you will need to get your fingerprints scanned. You should contact your local sheriff or police department for more information. Most of them will do this for a small fee.

You will have to get a Certificate of Work Experience. This is to prove you have had enough experience to qualify as a journeyman. There is a form you will fill out for each construction project you've completed. You have to complete disclosure statements for any criminal plea or conviction you have on your record.

Contractors with employees must complete a workers' compensation form. Those without have to file an exemption. Individuals who have learning disabilities and need extra time, or other accommodations, to take the test, must complete the examination accommodation request form. A doctor's letter may be required, or an assessment from an academic institution.

Processing the application will cost you three hundred thirty dollars. Certified funds in that amount must accompany your application. The FBI check costs about seventeen dollars. The Department of Justice check is thirty-two. These fees may vary depending on who does the fingerprint scanning.

You've got to get at least sixty-seven percent on your exam to pass. You will have better luck passing it on your first try if you take a course either in the classroom or online, offered by a reputable school. Courses include manuals and practice tests.

You can have a successful career in the construction business, when you have a knack for it. Before you can start though, you must be licensed and bonded. You must consider the money you spend getting this done an investment in your future.
