Terracing is an important method that has been used over the years. This is whereby your area is dug out into small structures in a horizontal manner which resembles steps like erections. In case it rains heavily, then the soil that would have been washed away is trapped on the ridges. Water is conserved in the process, and also the fertility of the soil at stake is also improved.

Another method that can be used is the creation of diversions. Many channels of soil are created and then directed on to the main one on the lower side. Whenever there are lots of rain the excess water can be directed in the collection point.

Conservation ponds can also serve a great importance in maintaining the stability of a hill. For instance, when it rains and water runs off a slope, then all of it can be collected on the dam. The storage of water during the heavy rains helps a lot in reducing the peak flows and thus no flooding at all.

Sabo dams can also be used in such sloppy regions. They are made in such a way that the opening is very tiny to prevent any fast lowing debris. The chaff that comes along with water is allowed to come in slowly and this is a great way to prevent any washout.
