Traveler Precautions For Safer Vacations To Peru

By Donna Beley

Vacations to Peru allow travelers to visit sites unlike any other location in the world. There are a few issues concerning safety when traveling to this country of which travelers should be aware. BY keeping these precautions in mind, the chances of any problem developing on the trip are greatly reduced. Uninformed travelers have the greatest risk of endangering their safety.

The fastest and easiest way to get around most cities is by using a taxi. To keep the traveler safe, choose a taxi operated by one of the reputable companies. Ask the staff at the hotel, tourist office or airport to recommend an officially licensed company. Staff members at these establishments with proper identity can also arrange rides. If an unknown taxi must be used, be sure to note its registration number and conceal valuables before entering.

Buses offer service between the various cities and towns. Avoid bus travel at night if at all possible. The roads are curved and narrow so night time travel increases the number of accidents. In addition, be sure lodging arrangements are made before boarding the bus if arriving at a new city after dark. Keep the straps of carry-on baggage secured around the arm or leg. Always keep an eye on your checked luggage if the cargo bay below the bus is opened.

Do not carry large amounts of cash. Use credit or debit cards to withdraw more cash as it is needed from local banks or ATM machines. They are located in all towns and cities, but may not be in the smaller villages or remote areas. Use credit cards for purchases wherever possible. The card providers often offer the most up to date exchange rate for purchases.

Keep the original passport in a safe location at all times. Since there is always a potential for a lost or stolen passport, make two photocopies of it. Keep one stored with other personal items and the other in a safe location on your person. When traveling, leave valuables at home. Always keep alert of the surroundings.

Many travelers enjoy the Peruvian nightlife, but it is important to remember your own safety. Buy your own drinks and refuse those offered by a stranger. Ask hotel staff for the phone number to call a safe taxi to transport you back to the hotel. Always travel in groups and avoid consuming alcohol to the point of intoxication.

The tap water is not safe to drink unless it is boiled. Bottled water is a safer source. To prevent possible stomach upset, avoid consuming foods prepared by the street vendors. While most keep the food clean and safe, the only way to be sure is avoiding these foods. Bring medication from home that will help with an upset stomach. If medication is needed, the Peruvian farmacia can provide many different medications to meet one's needs.

Vacations to Peru can be very safe, if one takes precautions. There is much to see and do. Tourist should always be aware of surroundings and cautious when in unfamiliar areas.
