What To Know About The NYPD Museum

Those who take the time to visit New York City generally think of going to one of the many world-famous museums the city is so well known for having. However, one of the more popular choices for many happens to be the NYPD museum. This location is dedicated to those who have served the department since it was first established in 1845. It also shows the many highlights and issues that the department has dealt with ever since it started.

While the museum was incorporated in 1998, the actual building was built back in Lower Manhattan in 1901 until 1911 by the Hunt & Hunt architectural firm. The building was created to replace the stationhouse that stood in the same location, which was originally built back in 1884. In fact, it is said that the current building is located on the same foundation as the original 1884 structure.

Upon the completion of the building's construction, the new site became the home of the First Precinct and remained as such until 1973. The precinct was then merged with and relocated to the Fourth Precinct in Uptown, where more room was available. After being repurposed in 2001, the site became known as the New York City Police Department Museum and was dedicated Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani.

The site's main purpose is to serve as an educational tool for visitors who want to understand and learn more about the NYPD, along with its history. It also serves as a living memorial for the men and women who have served and protected the city, along with those who continue to do so today. It houses numerous exhibitions, collections and galleries that highlight various events, histories, and artifacts that have been relevant to the department since it first came into existence, including that of the New York City Police Academy.

Although most of the exhibits can be ideal for people of various age groups, children have their own special exhibit to visit. The Discovery Zone is the idea place for children who are 10 years of age or younger. They often find plenty to do within the different areas of the exhibit, such as the Park and Precinct, Multipurpose Areas, Emergency Services Unit, and Police Academy.

Although the Junior Offices Discovery Zone is great for kids of all ages, younger ones tend to appreciate things like the climbing structure and the special police vehicle that they can work on, maintain, and even drive. Older children often appreciate activities such as Police Academy challenges. They also have access to fun crime scenes and more.

Adult visitors and children alike can several numerous areas that, such as the permanent exhibit that is dedicated to the tragic events that took place in the city during September 11th, 2001. Visitors can also visit another permanent exhibit that highlights the aftermath involved for police since September 11th, 2001, including many of the practices used today. The Hall of Heroes is another popular stop for visitors, which is a permanent exhibit that honors the men and women who have served selflessly while in the line of duty.

The NYPD museum can be a great place to visit for families, couples, friends, kids, and individuals alike.
