The Easiest Way To DeClutter A Messy Closet

By Dylan DeCarlo

So your closet is a mess and you have no idea where / how to get started. It seems like some sort of insurmountable task that you REALLY don't want to do. I understand. DeCluttering an out of control closet isn't on my list of fun things to do either...

Our minds are exaggerating. DeCluttering your closet doesn't have to be as intimidating a task as you're making it out to be.

1. Free up some time and get boxes. Depending on the size of your closet this may take an hour or maybe even a few. The amount of boxes you get depends on the size of your closet as well. You may need up to six. Plan accordingly.

2. Now it's time to get messy. Dive into your closet and take everything out. Don't even think about the stuff you're taking out. Just take it all out and lump it into a giant pile on the floor. You may want to put down some plastic to keep the floor sanitary.

3. Now you're going to start sorting through your pile of stuff, separating it into THREE smaller sections: Keep. Toss. Maybe. Don't get too caught up in thinking about what pile to place something in. It should come more naturally... Like within 5 - 1- seconds of holding the item. The "maybe" pile is to be kept small. For items you're really on the fence about. This pile will be "hidden away" for 6 months and if in 6 months from today the items are still there, donate them or throw them away.

4. Wipe down the inside of the empty closet itself. It should be crystal clear by the time you're done. Now put every item in the "keep" box (or boxes) back in the closet. Nice and neat. Keep things spaced out and organized.

5. Ok... This next step is really important and it's where most people fail. Label and DATE the "maybe" box with todays date. This pile should be small relative to the other two. Place the box in storage (basement, under your bed, out of sight...) Toss the stuff still in the box 6 months later. Oh, and it might help it you use your phone's calendar to alert you 6 months from today. Most likely everything will still be in the maybe box. The toss box(s) are to be dealt with as soon as possible. That means to either donate all of it, sell some of it at a garage sale / eBay or give it to friends and family. Personally, I end up donating 95% of my "toss" pile. If I find something worth my time selling I'll sell it but if you're anything like me, you'll most likely procrastinate on selling it. Just give it to somebody who needs it more than you. :)

6. Now it's time to sit back and relax. Reap the sweet rewards of a job well done! Treat yourself to some cold beer or fancy margarita. Whatever floats your boat baby!
