Electronic cigarettes and how they work

By Sean Wiley

You may have heard of E cigarettes, but do you understand what they are and how they work? The first thing you should know about electronic cigarettes is that they can be used as a great alternative to smoking tobacco.

What the E cigarette is designed for is to virtualise the common cigarette. They simulate the experience of smoking tobacco for smokers, using a specially designed and very clever system. Inside the case, which looks just like a standard tobacco cigarette, are parts such as the battery, an atomised cartridge and some liquid.

When you breathe in on an electronic cigarette, a switch is activated by the pressure to turn on a tiny heating element. This element produces the vapour, which looks and even tastes like smoke but has no smell and isn't produced as a result of smoking tobacco.

There are electronic cigarettes available which either have nicotine present in the vapour and which don't - it's up to the user. Another choice users can make is what flavour they would like their E cigarettes to have, whether it's plain tobacco or nicotine or something more unusual such as chocolate or apple.

As these electronic cigarettes don't produce actual smoke, they can be used in venues where the smoking ban is in force and they also don't pass on passive smoke to nearby people. They are also considered to be far healthier and less anti-social than tobacco-based cigarettes. They are often used by people attempting to quit smoking, working in a similar way to nicotine patches, sprays and gum.

It is necessary to replace the cartridge in your E-cigarette when it runs out. However, not only do electric cigarettes last up to twenty times longer than a normal cigarette, but they are far cheaper to buy. In addition to replacing the cartridge, you will also have to charge the batteries of your electric cigarettes.
