Security Considerations for the Elderly

By Mark Mahaffey

As people age, they often become unable to care for themselves. As a result, they often move into the homes of their adult children. In fact, this is becoming more and more common as our population ages. The adult children assume the primary guardianship and care of their elderly parents and care for them in their homes.

It goes without saying that this can indeed be very trying for the adult children. They suddenly have much more responsibility: taking care of parents who may have sensitive medical issues or may be very frail. If they cannot be home to take care of them all the time, they surely worry for their safety.

One of the best things that these adult children can do in this case is to have a home alarm system installed. These types of systems offer much peace of mind, because of the many ways that they can provide for the safety of the elderly. And even people on a restricted budget can afford them; it does not cost an arm and a leg to install a basic system.

Medical monitoring is perhaps one of the most important ways that a home security system can help to keep senior citizens safe. When the system is connected to a medical monitoring service, that service can keep an eye on the home all day and all night long. The elderly person can simply push a button if she needs help. The button will then notify the monitoring service that she is in need.

Posting a sign outside the house which announces the presence of the alarm system is also a good idea. Many robbers will not attempt to break into a home that has an alarm system, because they know it increases the chances that they will be caught. They will likely pass on by in search of a house that will be easier and safer for them to intrude.

Finally, the fire security that home alarm systems provide is a great comfort to those caring for the elderly. Since the elderly may not immediately realize that there is smoke or fire in the house, they are in danger of being harmed by house fire. The sensitive smoke and heat detectors that come with quality alarm systems can detect the danger and alert the monitoring service, possibly long before the elderly person even realizes that there is a problem!
