Simple Tips On How To Be A Good Cook

By Roxane J. Talisen

There are lots of methods and techniques to learn when cooking. Some are a snap and only take a few minutes, while some are really involved and can take hours. Regardless of you current cooking aptitude, you may find the following tips helpful for improving your cooking skills.

You must stay organized so that you don't burn any food. An organized kitchen is a much more productive kitchen. Also, organize your refrigerator and pantry to avoid buying unnecessary items that will eventually be thrown out.

When not in use, put your spices in an area that receives the lowest amount of light and heat. Shelf life can be significantly decreased for those spices which have been exposed to too much light, dampness and heat. To keep your spices spicy and fresh, store them in an area that is cool and dark. Fresh spices can greatly enhance your meals, making this effort well worth your time.

You should instead set the watch timer and the oven timer. If you engage in another activity away from your oven, you will hear your watch timer beep.

A quick way to make your food more flavorful is to use beef stock or chicken stock in place of water. The addition of bouillon cubes in the water is another easy way to flavor a meal. This will give your food the required amount of moisture and it will also add flavor as well.

Although garlic is a great flavor booster that compliments a wide variety of foods, it can unfortunately stick to your hands. Try rubbing your hands on the inside of a steel sink after you work with the garlic or other potent ingredients. This will cleanse your hands and prevent the smells from transferring to the food you handle next.

Use a few spices to flavor your cooked meals. Salt and pepper are everyday seasonings, but a little garlic, ginger, or cayenne can add an interesting zest to a prepared meal. Many people have different tastes when it comes to spice. Make these available for customization after you cook the meal, instead of adding them during cooking. This will make it so everyone can have it their way.

If you plan to prepare food outside for a cookout, make sure the grill itself is prepped beforehand. Prepare the grill approximately half an hour prior to putting the food on. The coals should have a coating of ash and be at a medium heat. This is optimum grilling temperature.

You need to follow instructions exactly when making macaroni and cheese. This ensures that the macaroni is cooked to perfection and that the cheese is the right consistency to blend well with the pasta. You can use a solid spoon to serve macaroni and cheese. You can use pepper to add some spice to the macaroni, if you choose.

Potatoes are divided in different categories, and each category should be used differently. You can make potato salad with waxy potatoes, but you should use a different kind for fries or mashed potatoes. Russet potatoes will produce the fluffiest results.

Always remember to remove all the extra fat from soups and stews. If you feel your stew is excessively fatty, an easy fix is to stick it in the fridge and let the fat solidify and float on top. On a spoon, place a cube of ice and lightly skim it around the surface of the soup. You may be surprised to see that the excess fat will accumulate on the surface of the ice cube. Some people use paper towels to blot up extra fat on a food. This can be a difficult to nearly impossible task with stew or soups that are not extremely thick and contain a lot of liquid. The paper towel might even dissolve and you'll end up with paper in your food.

Store all spices and herbs in dry, dark and cool conditions to get the maximum amount of flavor from them. Spices will rapidly lose flavor if exposed to heat, light or humidity. This just exposes them to the elements and degrades their flavors.

Use the helpful things that you have learned from this article. Before long, your loved ones will be in awe of your cooking ability.
